Recent break-ins at Helping Hearts Survive have left the not-for-profit charity business facing significant losses, but volunteers say the incident has only strengthened their determination to continue supporting local families in need.
The Dural-based op shop was forced to temporarily close on Thursday, 21 May, after thieves stole donated goods, cash, food and support vouchers, and a collection of valuable jewellery intended for an upcoming fundraiser.
In a message shared with supporters, the organisation said: “The loss is substantial and a significant portion of our jewellery collection, antiques, clothing and a generous donation meant for our upcoming fundraiser, cash that was slated for banking, food vouchers, fuel vouchers, shopping vouchers and countless other items.”
The break-in also damaged the shop’s cash register, disrupting operations and delaying some services. A few weeks later, on Friday, 5 June, they were broken into again.
While the theft has been a setback, Helping Hearts Survive said the incident has highlighted the important role the organisation plays in the community.

“Helping Hearts Opportunity Shop is at the very heart of our organisation,” the group said.
“Through our shop, we are able to support individuals and families in need throughout our local community.”
The organisation said donations from local residents help provide affordable clothing and household items while supporting the preparation of weekly food hampers for people experiencing hardship.
“More than just a shop, Helping Hearts Survive has become a place of connection, kindness, and comfort,” the group said.
“Our team shares laughter, purpose, and a genuine passion for helping others, and many of our regular visitors have become part of our extended family.”
The robberies were particularly upsetting because of the impact they had on volunteers and those who rely on the service.
“The recent robbery was deeply upsetting for Mel, myself, and our entire team,” Helping Hearts said.
“Beyond the financial loss, it felt heartbreaking to see a place built on care and community violated in this way.”
Among the stolen items during the first break-in was a bag of jewellery donated for the upcoming A Touch of Green Gala Ball Fundraiser.
“Sadly stolen was a bag of valuable jewellery, which had been generously donated by one of our locals for our Gala Ball fundraiser,” the organisation said.
The loss comes as Helping Hearts prepares for the event, now just weeks away, with only a few tickets remaining. The fundraiser is expected to bring community members together for an evening focused on “connection, purpose, community, and making a meaningful difference together.”
Despite the setback, volunteers say the response from the community has been overwhelming.
“The messages, donations, and encouragement have reminded us exactly why we do what we do, and we are incredibly grateful.”
The organisation’s motto, “From Struggle to Strength”, has become a guiding principle in the days following the incident.
“While this experience has been difficult, we are determined to move forward with strength, gratitude, and hope,” the group said.
