Celebrate Recycling Centre’s Fifth Birthday by Going Behind the Scenes

To celebrate the Thornleigh Community Recycling Centre’s (CRC) fifth birthday this November, Hornsby Shire Council invites you to enjoy its first ever open day. Go behind the scenes to experience the world of recycling and discover how this popular community facility has diverted over 3,000 tonnes of problem waste.

The fun and informative free birthday party on Sunday 13 November, during National Recycling Week, will have activities for the whole family to enjoy. Come on down to:

Go on a guided tour to discover how all your unwanted items are processed and ask all your burning questions.

Get up close and personal with our three larger than life murals and talk to renowned Sydney artists OXKING and Phibs. Take photos and get a sneak peak of how our latest mural by Jamie Eastwood is taking shape.

Watch demonstrations to learn all about worm farming and composting. Take a peek inside one of our garbage trucks.

Visit stalls to hear more from Council’s Natural Resources and Sustainability teams.

Buy delicious food and drink from trucks and a coffee cart.

“Happy birthday to the CRC. Since it opened its doors five years ago, the community has embraced it, with over 140,000 cars driving through,” said Hornsby Shire Mayor Philip Ruddock.

“It has gone from strength to strength with the range of items collected growing each year. Recent additions now include clothing and accessories, soft plastics, hard plastics, x-rays, and expanded polystyrene, in addition to the core problem waste.

“In the past year alone, we’ve collected the equivalent weight of 30 elephants in e-waste, 50 cows in clothing, fine rhinoceros in expanded polystyrene and nine hippopotamuses in batteries!

“Due to the hard work of the friendly and efficient staff, visitors certainly value the centre. In a recent survey, 100 per cent of visitors said they were very satisfied with how easy it is to use. You can’t ask for better results!

“We’re now pleased to give something back to the thousands of people who support the CRC each year. I encourage everyone to come and enjoy this unique event to celebrate five fantastic years.”

The Community Recycling Centre Open Day will run from 10am-2pm on Sunday 13 November. Sessions will commence at 10am, 11am and 12pm. (Please do not bring recycling on the open day.) Places are limited, so booking is essential. Book now at https://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/crcopenday
