Bromeliad Society of Australia is holding its next monthly meeting at Federation Pavilion, Castle Hill Showground, on Saturday, 13 June. Doors open to the public at 10 am, with the formal meeting starting at 11.30 am.

The gathering has something extra on offer this time. NSW’s newest cohort of qualified Bromeliad Judges will run a hands-on workshop, walking attendees through what it actually takes to prepare a plant for competition. Five judges will each lead a small group, covering everything from trimming leaves and cleaning pots to top-dressing soil and spotting whether a plant is truly ready to be shown.

The workshop will touch on the core criteria used in judging — cultural perfection, conformation, colour and markings, inflorescence assessment, and plant maturity. It runs alongside the regular monthly plant competition, so seasoned competitors won’t miss their usual event.

Other meeting staples are also on: raffle, Show & Tell, and the low-pressure “Show” segment, where members can share a plant without it going under the microscope.

The society’s president, Ian Hook, can be reached on 0408 202 269 or at [email protected]. Further details are at bromeliad.org.au.
