A Young Voice Making A Real Difference

by Julian Leeser

Last November, I wrote about a remarkable idea from a young member of our community, Ashleigh Dewhurst. Ashleigh had noticed that some students can find it difficult to speak up when they are feeling worried, anxious or upset.

Her solution was simple but powerful: a “Voice Letterbox” where students could privately write or draw what’s on their mind, ensuring no child’s concern goes unheard.

Today, I’m proud to share that Ashleigh’s idea is no longer just a concept, it’s a reality.

The very first Voice Letterbox has now been delivered to Northholm Grammar. We were delighted to officially launch the initiative alongside Nate Atkinson, Principal of Northholm Grammar, and Bob Bramston, President of the North Epping Men’s Shed.

Their support reflects what this project is all about, community working together to back our young people.

Designed by Ashleigh herself and built by the dedicated volunteers at the North Epping Men’s Shed, this first letterbox will provide students with a safe, private way to share what’s on their mind. Not every child finds it easy to express their feelings face-to-face.

The Voice Letterbox creates another pathway for students to be heard, allowing teachers and school leaders to respond with care and support.

Since launching the initiative, more schools across our community have expressed interest, and additional letterboxes are now being built.

It’s a powerful reminder that real change often begins with the smallest voices and when a community listens, great things can happen.
