African Violets: Ideal Indoor Plants for All

African Violets

Galston District Garden Club welcomed members and visitors to its March meeting with guest speaker David Fripp, who delivered an informative presentation on African violets as ideal indoor plants. The discussion highlighted the growing popularity of these compact, flowering plants, particularly suited to apartment living and low-maintenance indoor gardening.

African violets are increasingly regarded as a practical choice for indoor spaces due to their small size, extended flowering period and minimal care requirements. Modern varieties now offer an expanded range of colours, leaf patterns and flower forms, the result of ongoing cultivation by dedicated growers.

The talk also covered best-practice care, including positioning plants in bright indoor areas away from direct sunlight, using specialised potting mix, and careful watering techniques that avoid wetting the leaves. Regular feeding, removal of spent flowers and yellowing leaves, and gentle leaf maintenance were also noted as key to keeping plants healthy and productive.

The club’s April meeting featured Beth Shade, who spoke on worm farms, continuing the club’s focus on practical and sustainable gardening topics. Meetings were held on the second Wednesday of each month at Galston Community Hall, 34 Arcadia Road, Galston, commencing at 7.30 pm. Visitors were welcome.
