Following the success of the first, sold-out event, Culture in the Hills, I had the great fortune of being invited to speak at the second Culture in the Hills event for June. The event was hosted by the Hills Community Aid, the Community Migrant Resource Centre, and the Hills Multicultural Network.
The event was put on in celebration of ‘The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development’. There were people and groups from many cultures, including First Nations, Filipino, South African, and Malaysian cultures.
The event was opened with a Welcome to Country and a Cultural Performance from some First Nations students from Northmead High School. There were Cultural performances from the Filipino Dance Ensemble and from Malaysian performer, Juliana Jamal. There was a panel discussion held in which someone from each culture was asked a variety of questions about their culture and about diversity within the Hills.
During the break, everyone was invited to browse the stalls, contribute to a communal painting, and enjoy some delicious food from the participating cultures. People wandered around, soaking in and celebrating the fun and the diversity of the cultures.
The Hills Community Aid, Community Migrant Resource Centre, and Hills Multicultural Network have been doing outstanding work with the community of the Hills. They continue to make a positive difference in the lives of the members of our community and with the wider communities of Sydney.
