The Hawkesbury River communities, recovering from fires and multiple floods, rejoiced in June to celebrate the Dargle Valley Boat Club’s ‘Winter Spectacular’ at Dargle Water Ski Park, Lower Portland. I was impressed by the number of people in attendance, the skill of the boat drivers and the atmosphere. It is amazing how the Dargle property has been repaired and has recovered from the flood of last year where some parts were under at least 10m of water. All that reminded us of the flood was a plastic chair in a tree! Events like these are fantastic for local tourism, with this event seeing competitors from right across Australia.
Major patching has been competed on Sackville Ferry Rd. Over 9000m2 of pavement has been rectified, making the residents in this area very happy. Recently I was approached by the Lower Portland Sackville North Progress Association about safety concerns regarding a bend on Sackville Ferry Road just up from the ferry, tricky to navigate in the dark or extreme fog, which is common at this time of year. I am now pleased that these concerns will be addressed with the installation of an 85 metre length of double centreline (BB) line marking.
I celebrated World Environment Day with a guided walk in Glenhaven/Castle Hill, and learned about the local Bushcare group. The Council’s Community Environment Centre is an educational resource, community hub and environmental demonstration site for residents, visitors, and volunteers on various topics such as gardening, planting natives and sustainability in the home and backyard, and is open to visitors and volunteers every Thursday and Saturday.
The Hills Council’s Bidjiwong Community Nursery at Ted Horwood Reserve produces local native plants for the shire’s reserves, and residents are welcome to four free plants every year. Volunteers are involved in looking after the native bush, plant identification, fauna monitoring, weed control and seed collection for propagation.
