Kenthurst Probus Club opened its July meeting on a high note, in more ways than one. President Burt Stuut welcomed two new faces into the fold, Peter and Wendy Paton, before handing over to guest speaker Phil Allen, who brought along a case of handbells and gave the room something it hadn’t heard before.

Each bell in Allen’s set produces just one note, hand-operated and precise, but strung together across a group of players, they can carry a full tune. He walked members through how the instrument works before performing a short set that included “Old Man River,” “The Colonel Bogey March” and “Jerusalem.” The applause, by most accounts, was warm and genuine.
There’s plenty on the calendar to keep members busy in the months ahead. A Christmas in July luncheon has already been organised, with a guided tour of the Parramatta Female Factory locked in for August. September brings a Morning Tea at the Waddell Café, hosted by students from Galston High School.
Winter has put a dent in the club’s usual walking program, though members expect to be back on the footpaths once spring arrives, and a Christmas Luncheon in December will round out the year.
Kenthurst Probus meets at 9.39 am on the third Monday of every month except December, at the Kenthurst Uniting Church on the corner of Jones Road and Kenthurst Road. Guests are always welcome.
