Each year SI Hornsby awards an educational scholarship to a female student recommended to us by Host International, an organisation that works with refugees and host communities to build hope and inclusion. https://www.hostint.org
This year our recipient is Sara Najem. Sara was evacuated from Afghanistan last August and she is currently studying at TAFE and wishes eventually to study Criminology and join the police force. She wants to follow the career of her grandfather, a high-ranking police officer, who was killed by the Taliban in 2001.
Sara confidently addressed our members in English at our last business meeting, despite only being in the country for eight months and told us about herself and her hopes and dreams for the future. Sara has purchased a laptop with the $1,000 grant which we gave her and she will be using this to help her complete her studies.
