Hip Hopping on the AGT Stage

The Lil Groovers all-girl hip hop dance group will be strutting their stuff on the television show Australia’s Got Talent, having received all round ‘yes’ votes.

The dancers, aged between five and 14, are students of Rouse Hill hip hop dance school Base 181 Studios, which is co-owned by Justice Crew member Samson Smith. Samson is passing on his impressive skills and experience to the next generation of what he calls b-girls (break dancing girls) at his dance studio.

The 36-year-old Baulkham Hills resident was part of the talented dance group Justice Crew, who won Australia’s Got Talent in 2010 with their sensational dance moves.

Samson said his Lil Groovers received four ‘yes’ votes from judges in this year’s Australia’s Got Talent competition after impressing them with their high-energy dance performance.

The group, up against tough competition, were ecstatic with their achievement, even though they didn’t progress further in the show.

“I’ve had an amazing dance career that’s given me so many life skills and opportunities, I want to give my students the same amazing experience,” Samson told the Dooral Roundup.

He said break dancing, an athletic style of street dance, is traditionally performed by male dancers or b-boys however his b-girls are proving they can do better.

Base 181 Studios co-owner and director Chantal Curmi said breakdancing is growing in popularity among the young female dancers, thanks in part to the success of the Lil Groovers and the addition of breaking dancing in the Olympics.

“These girls have inspired so many others to give breaking a try which is just fantastic to see,” Chantal said. Australia’s Got Talent will be airing on Channel 7 in early October. For information about classes at Base 181 Studios, visit base181studios.com
