After more than two decades serving the pool industry, a familiar and much-loved member of the local community is preparing to step away from the business he helped make a household name. Alan Barnes, the friendly face behind the counter at the independent Dural Pool Shop, is officially retiring – leaving behind a legacy of kindness, loyalty, and community care.
Alan’s journey into the industry began in 2002. Looking to trade his screen-filled days in IT for a fresh career path, he took on a part-time weekend role at a franchised pool shop. He quickly discovered a passion for the hands-on work and the opportunity to interact with customers.
He and his wife later moved on to another franchised pool business, before deciding to take the next step in their journey. In 2013, they proudly opened their own independent, family-run store at 270 Newline Road, Dural.
For Alan, running the shop was never just about business, it was about being part of the community.
A long-time Hills resident, Alan raised his family locally, with all of his children working in the shop at some stage before moving on to their own adult lives and careers.
Over the years, the store became something of a community hub where locals knew they could always count on a warm smile and trusted advice to keep their backyard pools safe and sparkling.
“I will most miss seeing, chatting with, and helping the regular customers I have built relationships with over a period of more than 12 years. I want to thank the entire community for all their incredible support and kindness over the years,” says Alan.
Alan’s contribution to the local community extended far beyond the store. A major highlight of his time in business was sponsoring youth sports through the Galston Swimming Club and Norwest Swimming Club, something he said brought him great joy as he supported young local athletes.
As he steps into retirement, Alan is looking forward to spending more time with family, travelling, and supporting local volunteer initiatives.
