Sarah-Anne Koot spearheaded a strong showing by Cherrybrook Athletics Club at the 2022 Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships in Adelaide. The highachieving Hills club also shone at the 2023 ACT/NSW Combined Events Championships in mid-January while adding the prestigious Treloar Shield to their bulging trophy cupboard.
Sarah-Anne captured silver in the under 16 90m hurdles with a time of 12.77 seconds, just shy of her personal best of 12.75 set during the heats. She is eyeing a place in the Australian Under 20 Championships and has the skills to go all the way.
Xavier Hennessey, Viktorija Calusic, and Joel Moresi all scooped up bronze medals at the All Schools championships held in Adelaide from December 9-11. Xavier finished third in the U16 pole vault with a personal best of 3m to qualify for the Australian Athletics Junior Championships and also has his eye on World U20s.
Xavier maintained his brilliant form to improve his PB with a superb 3.10m jump at the ACT/NSW Combined Events Championships U18 decathlon in Canberra on January 14 and 15. “I like that there’s always a challenge and goal to work toward,” Xavier said.
Barker College’s Viktorija Calusic brought home the bronze at the All Schools with a leap of 1.71m in the U17 high jump final. Like many of the rising youngsters at the All Schools, Viktorija said she would love to compete for Australia in the future.
The other Cherrybrook AC medallist was Joel Moresi who won bronze in the U14 high jump with a leap of 1.71m, having finished eighth in the 800m.
Teddy Hampton, who has qualified to represent NSW in the pole vault at the Australian Athletics Junior Championships in Brisbane in April, has his sights set on a PB of over 3m. He finished just short of a medal at the Adelaide event despite a PB of 2.85m in the U15 pole vault final.
Robbie Cullen won gold for NSW in the U20 decathlon at the ACT/NSW Combined Events Championships in Canberra with Blake Billingsley claiming silver in the U14 pentathlon.
Samuel Price made up for his disappointment at the All Schools by winning silver for NSW in the U16 heptathlon, after finishing seventh in the U14 shot put in Adelaide.
Samuel and Robbie qualified for Nationals in the U15 heptathlon and U20 decathlon respectively, along with Xavier Hennessey in the U17 decathlon.
Cherrybrook Athletics also won the coveted U14 Treloar Shield Championship in December, after their youngsters excelled across six rounds of competition. The club also qualified for the Treloar Shield final in the Open age group (finishing the six rounds in second place) and U18 (also finishing the six rounds in second spot). The Treloar Shield is the premier club competition run by Athletics NSW.
Cherrybrook Little Athletics also has a very strong squad at the LANSW Region 5 championships at SOPAC on February 4-5, with high hopes many of them will progress to LANSW State titles.
Many of their athletes are registered in both Little Athletics NSW and Athletics NSW, giving them the opportunity to compete in both LA and senior Athletics NSW events.
Cherrybrook Athletics Club president Michael Hampton said they are proud of all the recent successes. “Our young athletes train hard to achieve their goals,” said. “But it is also clear that they enjoy athletics and take great pride and satisfaction in their achievements.
“The results in the Treloar Shield show the encouragement given to the Little Athletes to transition and continue their athletics journey into seniors, which is a focus of the club. “Winning the U14s and placing second after the main rounds in U18s and Opens shows the strength of the club, its great spirit, and future promise for so many of our young athletes.”
The club has a proud history of producing international stars, including Olympians Michelle Jenneke, Jenny Blundell, and Georgia Winkcup and Commonwealth Games aces Julie Charlton and Samantha Dale.
