Residents are being invited to slow down with a good book this winter as Hornsby Shire Council launches a new Winter Reads program through Hornsby Shire Libraries for adults and teens aged 16 and over, with book vouchers up for grabs.
The reading challenge will run from June 1 to August 31, 2026, encouraging participants to read for pleasure during the quieter winter months.
Readers will receive one entry into the prize draw for every book they complete, with 10 book vouchers valued at $30 each to be won.

Warren Waddell said the initiative reflects Council’s commitment to literacy and community wellbeing.
“This is the first time Hornsby Shire Libraries has run a Winter Reads program, and it’s been designed specifically with adults in mind,” Mayor Waddell said.
“Winter is a great time to slow down and reconnect with reading. Reading can support mental wellbeing by helping people relax, stay mentally active and engage with new ideas, and our libraries offer a welcoming place to do just that.”
To mark the launch, participants looking for reading inspiration are encouraged to visit a dedicated display at Hornsby Library throughout June.
The display will feature book recommendations suited to different interests and reading moods, helping readers discover something new over the cooler months.
Adults and teens aged 16 and over can register online or collect a form from Hornsby Shire library branches at Hornsby, Berowra, Pennant Hills and Galston.
Hornsby Shire Libraries also runs a range of programs throughout the year, including Big Summer Read for children, story time sessions, school holiday activities, author talks and a home library service.
