Taste of Wisemans

Clr Mitchell Blue | The Hills Shire Council

Returning is the popular A Taste of Wisemans at Wisemans Ferry Park on 28th September. Set against stunning natural surrounds, this foodie event showcases the best in local produce, wine, and gourmet treats. Enjoy live music, free family activities, and an array of offerings from local wineries, distilleries, and food vendors.

One of The Hills Shire’s most historic landmarks, Bella Vista Farm, will be reimagined through light and sound as part of Orange Blossom Festival. Residents and visitors will be captivated as they step into ‘Echoes – Luna Light Journey where they will experience the rich history of Bella Vista Farm like never before – from the Dharug people and their study of the stars to the early settlers and the citrus orchards the region was known for.

All retold through custom soundscapes, light installations and pulsating special effects. Travel along the reimagined convict road, wander through fluorescent farms and flower fields, and witness the story of Elizabeth and John Macarthur, the founders of the Australian wool industry.

The much-loved Orange Blossom Festival (OBF) was back this September. It was the largest annual event in The Hills and ran all month long. One of that year’s highlights was the return of the OBF Parade at Rouse Hill Town Centre. Main Street came alive with local performers, community groups, and vibrant floats, making it a fantastic event for all to enjoy. The parade was held on 13th September.

Bushfire Preparedness
As the Chair of The Hills Bushfire Management Committee and a local volunteer firefighter, I am so passionate about bushfire safety and preparedness. As the bush fire season approaches, it’s crucial for NSW residents and landowners to be aware of their risk and take steps to protect their homes and properties. To help you prepare, the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) hosts Get Ready Weekend events every September, providing valuable information and resources to ensure you’re ready for the upcoming bush fire season. This year, Get Ready Weekend will be held on 20th and 21st September with many of our local RFS brigades holding events.

Bush fires have always been part of life in The Hills. From Glenhaven and Annangrove in 1975, Kenthurst in 1991, through to the devastating fires in 1994 and again in 2002 at Maroota South, Glenorie, and Kenthurst – our community has seen how quickly the landscape can change. It has been more than five years since Australia’s last major bush fire season made headlines around the world. In that time, population growth and new developments have transformed suburbs like Box Hill, North Kellyville, and Annangrove.

But while our streets may look different, the risk of bush fire has not changed. That’s why The Hills District Rural Fire Brigades invite you to take part in the 4 Weeks to Fire Ready Challenge, a program designed specifically for The Hills community. Most homes are lost not to flames but to ember attack; burning embers carried on the wind that can travel kilometres ahead of a fire, igniting gutters, gardens, and even brand-new homes in suburban streets. Fires also move so fast that you cannot rely on a fire truck being there when you need it.

A bush fire survival plan doesn’t take long to make. But not having one? That could cost your home, your memories, or your life. I strongly encourage you to sign up to the 4 Weeks to Fire Ready Challenge.
