Walk with the Wanderers – Bushwalking in Sydney and Surrounds

For those who love Sydney bushwalking, fresh air and good company, one northern suburbs walking group has quietly built a reputation as one of the city’s friendliest ways to explore the bush. The Wanderers — a long-running local group made up largely of energetic retirees — has turned its weekly outings into a beloved ritual of discovery, fitness and camaraderie.

Every Monday, a small group of around 10 to 15 walkers laces up for a new adventure. The schedule alternates between relaxed, shorter routes and more demanding treks stretching up to 16 kilometres. Whether an easy meander or a challenging climb, each walk includes the same essential elements: spectacular scenery, unhurried conversation and a laid-back lunch break in the bush.

Their footprint extends far beyond Sydney’s sandstone country. Twice a year the group packs its bags for an “away week”, travelling to regional towns and lesser-known landscapes for a deeper dose of exploration. Recent destinations have included Merimbula’s coastal trails, the alpine routes of the Snowy Mountains, Bermagui’s rugged headlands, the rolling countryside of Gloucester and the bushy surrounds of Mittagong. Evenings on these trips are spent swapping stories over dinner — a tradition as cherished as the walks themselves.

The Wanderers remain refreshingly accessible: no joining fees, no per-walk charges, just a welcoming community of people who love being outdoors. Anyone curious about joining — or simply keen to try a walk before committing — is invited to get in touch via thesydneywanderers@gmail.com or contact Allan on 0414 674 899.
