Hornsby Shire Council wins NSW Sustainable Cities Award

Hornsby Shire Council has been named the NSW Overall Sustainable Cities Winner for 2025 at the Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Sustainable Cities Awards.

This recognition highlights the Council’s leadership and commitment to sustainability. The awards ceremony took place on November 6 at Sydney Zoo, celebrating urban sustainability efforts across greater Sydney.

“Hornsby’s passion and innovation placed them firmly at the top this year,” said Peter Clark, Lead Assessor for the Sustainable Cities Awards.

“Hornsby Shire Council exemplifies sustainability leadership through a diverse range of initiatives, genuine community connections, and forward-thinking strategies. Their progressive and holistic approach to urban development, environmental stewardship, and inclusion sets a powerful example for other cities to follow.”

Mayor Warren Waddell welcomed the recognition, saying:

“We are incredibly proud to be named the Overall Winner of the 2025 Sustainable Cities Awards. This achievement reflects the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and community members who work tirelessly to make Hornsby Shire a better place for current and future generations. Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, and this award is a testament to our shared commitment to innovation, resilience, and inclusion.”

Hornsby Shire Council received Highly Commended awards in three categories:

  • Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation – Wisemans Ferry Community Resilience Plan
  • Community Spirit and Inclusion – New-Bub Bushcare
  • Waste Avoidance – Second Hand Markets  

We were also finalised in two further categories:

  • Communication and Engagement – #SayHighForest
  • Liveable Cities – Hawkins Hall Community Centre Upgrade

These accolades highlight the Council’s long-term commitment to embedding sustainability into daily operations and community life through creative initiatives, comprehensive engagement, and effective partnerships.
