Aussie Bird Count Starts 20th October

Aussie Bird Count

Registrations are now open for one of Australia’s most popular events: the 2025 Aussie Bird Count, running from Monday, 20th October to Sunday, 26th October.

This nationwide citizen science initiative invites Australians to spend just 20 minutes observing and recording birds in their neighbourhoods, helping to build a clearer picture of urban bird populations.

Organised by BirdLife Australia, the count is designed to connect people with nature while contributing valuable data for conservation, with one in six Australian bird species currently under threat. Participants simply use the free Aussie Bird Count app to submit their sightings, making it accessible for anyone, regardless of experience.

Sean Dooley, BirdLife Australia’s National Public Affairs Manager, stresses that no prior expertise is required: “It’s not about being a bird expert—it’s about enjoying time outdoors and discovering the local environment around you.”

Kate Millar, CEO of BirdLife Australia, says the event is a vital first step toward fostering curiosity, care, and protection for Australia’s feathered residents. She encourages everyone to take part and experience firsthand the joys of urban birdwatching.
