Registrations are open for the 2025 Aussie Bird Count, Australia’s largest citizen science project, taking place from Monday, 20th October to Sunday, 26th October 2025.
Participants are invited to spend 20 minutes observing and counting birds in their chosen spot and then submit their count using the free Aussie Bird Count app.
The event, organized by BirdLife Australia, aims to connect people with nature and gather data on urban bird populations to guide conservation efforts, with one in six Australian bird species currently under threat.
Sean Dooley, BirdLife Australia’s National Public Affairs Manager, emphasizes that it’s not about being a bird expert but about spending time outdoors and learning about the local environment.
Kate Millar, CEO of BirdLife Australia, highlights the count as a crucial first step towards greater curiosity, care, and protection of birds, inviting everyone to participate regardless of their birding experience.
