As spring draws to a close and the weather warms up, our pets are spending more time outdoors exploring the grass, bushland, and backyards they love so much. But with the extra sunshine and new growth come a few hidden hazards. Hills District Veterinary Hospital is here to help you keep your furry friends safe and healthy during this vibrant season.
Snakes are becoming increasingly active as temperatures rise. Curious dogs can easily stumble across one whilst exploring long grass or creek banks. It is a good idea to keep lawns mowed, avoid off-leash walks near thick scrub, and stay alert when out and about.
Grass seeds are another common troublemaker this time of year. These sharp little barbs can wedge themselves into paws, ears or coats, causing painful infections if left unnoticed. A quick check and brush-down after a walk can save a lot of discomfort.
Warm weather also means fleas and ticks are thriving. These tiny parasites can cause irritation and serious illness, but there are now excellent preventatives available – including yearly injections – to help keep pets protected throughout summer.
Allergies to pollens and grasses may flare up too, leading to itchy skin and ear irritation. Regular grooming and bathing can help, and owners should be aware that effective medications are available to relieve these symptoms and keep pets comfortable.
As the season changes, a little extra awareness goes a long way. With some care and attention, our pets can enjoy the best parts of the warmer months safely by our side.
