For one afternoon recently, Elouera Gardens Christian Retirement Village had extra company a group of Year 7 and 8 students from Pacific Hills School, dropping by to sit with residents of Yurana and talk.
Nothing about the visit was complicated. Teacher Jason Mok told the students beforehand to bring whatever they were good at and use it to make someone’s day better, and that was more or less the whole plan. What followed was conversation — the ordinary kind, about ordinary things, that turns out to matter more than it sounds like it should.
Year 7 student Elliott summed up why it stuck with him: the residents don’t get the same day-to-day freedom of choice that he does, and being there, paying attention, felt like it counted for something because of that. It’s the kind of observation that’s easy to miss and hard to forget once someone points it out.
By the end of the visit, the exchange had gone both ways. Students left with stories and a different sense of what a long life looks like from the inside. Residents got a few hours that felt less like any other — more company, more energy, more people asking how they were and actually waiting for the answer. Everyone in the room seemed better for it, and nobody looked especially keen to call it a day.
