Numeracy and Literacy Week Sparks Creativity and Community

This year’s Numeracy and Literacy Week proved to be a vibrant success, bringing students and staff together to explore essential skills through a range of inventive activities.

Across the week, pupils engaged in dynamic learning experiences that seamlessly blended reading, writing, and numeracy. In English classes, students discovered the patterns behind word frequencies, while Year 8 History lessons sharpened writing skills through the use of connectives to improve clarity and flow. Hub classes encouraged creativity as students drafted and edited original stories, demonstrating the school’s commitment to fostering literacy in innovative ways.

Teachers also embraced professional development sessions designed to strengthen literacy instruction, ensuring classrooms continue to implement evidence-based strategies that support student progress.

A standout moment of the week was the celebratory assembly led by the Student Representative Council (SRC). Students competed in the “Heads Up and Tails” challenge, tackling tricky literacy and numeracy questions, followed by a spelling competition that highlighted their impressive vocabulary skills. The event sparked friendly rivalry and reinforced a strong sense of community throughout the school.

Adding to the week’s successes, the Mathematics faculty engaged Year 12 students in a sequencing activity that combined numeracy and literacy. Students read and reordered problem-solving steps, deepening their understanding of mathematical concepts while honing literacy skills such as following logical structures and recognising key connectives.

Numeracy and Literacy Week showcased the school’s ethos that “a small school community creates BIG opportunities.” Staff and students alike embraced the celebration, making it a memorable and inspiring testament to the power of collaborative learning..
