Early on Saturday morning this month, I joined thousands of people gathered in the cold with smiles on their faces ready for a long 24 hours ahead. The Hills Relay for Life ran for its 22nd consecutive year and it shaped up to be the biggest year in the event’s history in the Hills.
Everyone came with energy and jackets, ready to walk. The event opened with inspiring words from the organisers and guests who spoke about their own experiences surviving cancer or caring for loved ones who suffered with cancer.
Then the ribbon was cut, and the walk began with the survivors and carers leading the pack, with onlookers cheering and applause all around. The day continued with performances from various people, there were dancers and singers, a Zumba class and Tai Chi. Many local organisations and community groups had stalls set up around the track and had teams participate in the relay.
By the afternoon of the Saturday the Hills Relay for Life had hit their goal of raising $250,000 dollars, and the announcement was met with cheers from the crowds of people. By the end of the day $262,000 had been raised.
The Hills Relay for Life will also be hosting a gala dinner in June to continue their good work.
