A few years ago, I was contacted by a number of residents from the Lower Portland area requesting the whereabouts of the Lower Portland WW1 and WW2 Honour Rolls.
The Honour Rolls once hung in the former Lower Portland Hall before it was demolished more than a decade ago. Since then, they have been in storage.
The community requested that the Honour Rolls again be displayed so that the veterans listed could be remembered and acknowledged by the community.
Given the age and material in which the rolls are constructed from, for preservation – a suitable location was required.
Well, the Honour Rolls have now found a new home. They are on display in a new purpose-built cabinet inside the Hills District Historical Society Museum.

The Museum is located on the Balcombe Heights Estate – Seven Hills Rd, Baulkham Hills and is open on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month between 12pm and 3pm. The museum has a great collection of historical items and the volunteers are happy to accommodate special visits for schools and community groups.
I visited the Museum on Remembrance Sunday to look at the Rolls and was very impressed.
I’d like to thank Ron McIntosh for working with the Hills District Historical Society and Council staff. Ron’s passion for history is commendable. He is now researching the history of each person listed on the Honour Roll and will be registering the Rolls with the War Memorial.
As this is the last article for the year, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May your Christmas be one of joy, peace, hope and love. Thank you for your ongoing support over the last twelve months and I look forward to working with you in 2026!
