For more than two decades, Hornsby Shire Council has quietly transformed suburban gardens into pockets of native habitat through its Native Plant Giveaways program. This year’s instalments in March and August are expected to continue that legacy.
The scheme allows each household to book a time to collect four complimentary native plants, carefully cultivated at the Warada Ngurang Community Nursery. Species on offer span ornamental grasses, flowering shrubs, climbers and trees of varying sizes, offering options for courtyards, family gardens and larger bush blocks alike.
To better coordinate attendance, the Shire has been divided into geographic areas. Residents in the southern suburbs will participate in March, while those in the northern areas will receive access during the August event.
Beyond simply distributing plants, the initiative aims to empower residents with knowledge. On-site horticultural specialists will guide participants toward species suited to their property’s conditions and long-term growth patterns, helping safeguard local flora and fauna.
As Hornsby continues to balance urban growth with environmental stewardship, the enduring popularity of the Native Plant Giveaways reflects a community eager to play its part in preserving the natural character that defines the Bushland Shire.
