Cherrybrook Club’s Historic Train Journey to Katoomba

Members of the Combined Probus Club of Cherrybrook recently enjoyed a budget-friendly excursion that unexpectedly became part of a moment in rail history. Travelling by train to Katoomba, the group discovered they were aboard one of the final services operated by the iconic NSW V Set trains, a truly historic train.

The journey took place on the penultimate day of the long-serving intercity fleet, drawing rail enthusiasts eager to photograph and ride the historic trains before their retirement. Carriages were filled with enthusiasts documenting the occasion, while cameras lined the route as the train passed through the Blue Mountains.

The outing continued with a seniors’ lunch in Katoomba, where members enjoyed an affordable meal before returning home after a day that combined nostalgia, travel and social connection.

The rail trip is just one of many activities organised by the club. Recent events have included ten-pin bowling, social gatherings, visits to The Rocks Discovery Museum, a walk across the Sydney Harbour Bridge from McMahons Point, and a visit to Wendy’s Secret Garden.

Regular club programs also feature craft sessions, book club meetings, card games, mahjong, golf outings, walking groups and gardening activities.

Looking ahead, members are planning theatre outings to The Great Gatsby and The Graduate, a social drive to Patonga and the club’s annual Changeover Lunch.

The club meets on the first Thursday of each month at the Cherrybrook Community and Cultural Centre and welcomes retirees and semi-retirees interested in social activities and new experiences.
