Glenhaven RFS a Great Reminder

Glenhaven RFS brigade has returned to face-to-face training sessions. You may see us back in Glenhaven streets and parks refreshing our skills and local knowledge. Recent training topics have included chainsaw use, village incidents and basic bush firefighting skills. All training is conducted in a covid-safe manner.

We have also welcomed 5 new members to the brigade this year and it is great to see them participating in our training.

Recent incident response has included calls to fallen trees, we have provided assistance to the public, and have attended a number of automatic fire alarms.

Fire alarms save lives. Do you have at least one installed and operating smoke alarm on each level of your house?

There are some other simple things you can do around your house to reduce the risk of fire. These are important to keep in mind as the weather starts to cool down:

  • Test smoke alarms regularly and change the battery at least once every 12 months.
  • Have a licensed electrician check your wiring and install a safety switch.
  • Don’t overload power points and switch off household appliances when not in use.
  • Never smoke in bed.
  • Never leave open fires unattended and always screen with a proper fireguard.
  • Heaters should be kept at least one metre from curtains, furniture and other flammable items.
  • Never place clothing over heaters.
  • Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children

House fires can cause serious injury or death, and can destroy your most cherished possessions and home. The area of the house where most fires occur is the kitchen, followed by the lounge and bedrooms.
