The Sydney Community Group (SCG), established in 2020, is a philanthropic organisation in Sydney, Australia, dedicated to improving the well-being and unity of the city’s diverse communities.
Focused on addressing the challenges faced by the homeless, SCG provides comprehensive services such as food banks, clothing distribution, shelter, and educational programs.
Their inclusive approach extends across various communities, including First Nations and multicultural groups, emphasising cultural sensitivity. The organisation is powered by a dedicated team of women volunteers, embodying a commitment to communal responsibility.
SCG strives to make a significant impact, positioning itself as a compassionate pillar in Sydney’s dynamic communities. For the first time, Sydney Community Group celebrated Diwali at the Epping Club on October 22.
The venue was beautifully decorated with traditional Diwali elements, including lights and floral arrangements, creating a welcoming environment for the 300-plus guests who attended. This celebration not only honoured Diwali's traditions but also brought together Sydney’s diverse community in a grand festivity.
The event was initiated by Councillor Sreeni Pillamarri of the Hornsby Shire Council, who, as a local resident, sought to embrace and celebrate cultural diversity with the Diwali festival.
This initiative would not only make Diwali a memorable event in that suburb but also demonstrate the councillor’s commitment to celebrating diversity, fostering unity, and enhancing the cultural richness of the community.
The successful execution of the event was skilfully managed by the Chair of Sydney Community Group Indu Harikrishna and CEO, Manjula Viswanath, along with board members Pallavi Sayam, Lakshmi Pillamarri, Divya Flora, and Saritha Jyothi, each playing a crucial role in the event’s success.
The event was graced by prominent Sydney figures, including Mr. Mark Speaksman, Leader of the Opposition, and several politicians like Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism Mark Coure, MPs Julian Leeser, Jordan Lane, and Mark Hodges, Senator Ms. Maria Koviac, Mayor Philip Rudock of Hornsby Shire, and Deputy Mayor Mrs. Swetha Deshpande from the City of Ryde, alongside other dignitaries from various communities.
Guests were treated to a lavish five-course Indian buffet, showcasing the rich culinary traditions of Diwali. The evening was further illuminated with cultural performances, featuring Indian Classical Dance by Rasika Dance Academy and Bollywood dances by Abhirami Natya Kshetra, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The event was more than a celebration; it was a bridge-builder, connecting people from different walks of life in the spirit of joy and togetherness. It strengthened community ties and left a lasting impression on all who attended.
In conclusion, the Diwali celebration at the Epping Club was more than just an event; it was a vibrant expression of community spirit, cultural richness, and unity in diversity.
It was a shining example of how community groups like Sydney Community Group can play a pivotal role in bringing people together to celebrate not only their own culture but also to appreciate and embrace the cultures of others.
