Bromeliad Society Meeting: Plant Sales and Presentations

Bromeliad Plants Care Tips and Meet

The Bromeliad Society of Australia will hold a meeting at the Federation Pavilion at Castle Hill Showground on Saturday, 21 March. The event opens to the public at 10 am with plant sales, followed by the formal meeting at 11.30 am. Enthusiasts can explore the unique diversity of bromeliads, celebrated for their unusual forms, textures, and colours.

One of the central topics of the meeting will be the wide spectrum of colour seen in bromeliad foliage. Deputy President Kerry McNicol will present an overview of how pigments, plant structure and environmental factors contribute to the distinctive hues and patterns found across the group.

Within the popular Neoregelia genus in particular, leaves can display dramatic combinations of reds, greens, yellows and blues. Variegation, intricate leaf markings and colour changes as plants mature add further complexity to their appearance.

Many bromeliads produce anthocyanins, natural pigments that help shield plants from sunlight while also enhancing leaf colour. Others feature fine hairs across the leaf surface, creating what growers refer to as scurfing, which can form speckled or patterned effects. Additional visual features include window-like spots, banding and circular markings that develop as leaves grow.

As well as educational presentations, the meeting will feature competitions, raffles and plant displays, giving members the chance to share unusual specimens and cultivation successes.

The gathering continues to provide a space for bromeliad enthusiasts to exchange knowledge, admire new plants and strengthen connections within Australia’s gardening community.
