Nearly 100 runners celebrated the opening of an additional 14 hectares of green space along the riparian corridor in The Gables community, with a five-kilometre run led by the Box Hill Run Club.
The Gables is located in the Hills district, approximately 50 kilometres north west of Sydney’s CBD, and is currently home to nearly 4,500 residents.
Once complete, the community will be completely walkable. This new green space builds on the existing 23 hectares of the riparian corridor already enjoyed by the community, as well as 16 kilometres of existing cycleways and walkways.
The expansion of the riparian corridor lies across two areas of the community – a 10.4-hectare area along Red Gables Road, and a 3.6-hectare area along Cataract Road. Together, these green spaces will feature a total of three pedestrian bridges, several park benches, and approximately two kilometres of walking paths.
The community run was followed by a celebration at Bobby Bakehouse, featuring live music and the run club’s favourite post-run treat – delicious doughnuts and other freshly baked goods.
Brothers Ben and Brenden Vengoa started the Box Hill Run Club six months ago – with just 20 members – to bring the community together and drive health and wellbeing. Today, around 100 people attend the run club which takes place every Sunday morning at The Gables.
Ben Vengoa said it was incredibly important to have a safe and family-friendly place to run in the community, and these new paths in the riparian corridor provide exactly that.
“Our runners have been eagerly awaiting the opening of the next stage of the riparian corridor and we’re hopeful the additional walking tracks will encourage new members to join, making us the biggest run club in the area,” Ben said.
Stockland Project Director Alex Koerber said it was great to see the community enjoying the new green space.
“Stockland’s vision is to be the leading creator and curator of connected communities, and this is underpinned by our purpose – a better way to live. We know staying active and healthy is important to our residents, and once complete, The Gables will have around 70 hectares of open space,” Mr Koerber said.
“We are thrilled to see the community and local groups like the Box Hill Run Club making the most of these spaces.”
