Breaker Morant’s Formative years discussed at Probus Club

The February meeting of the Kenthurst Probus Club offered members an in-depth look at the early life of the Australian historical figure Harry Breaker Morant.

Frequent guest speaker Graeme Sims presented research on Morant’s formative years in England and his journey to Australia, where he built a reputation as a skilled horseman and bush poet. The presentation explored the background of the man whose life would later become the subject of intense historical debate.

For many in the audience, Morant’s story was already familiar through the film Breaker Morant, which starred Edward Woodward. The talk, however, concentrated on the earlier chapters of Morant’s life, providing context for the events that unfolded during the Second Boer War.

Due to the breadth of the subject, the presentation will continue when Sims returns to the club in May to cover the later stages of Morant’s story.

In addition to guest speakers, the club maintains an active schedule of social and cultural outings. Upcoming events include a trip to the NSW Rail Museum, attendance at the Premier’s Concert and theatre visits planned for the autumn months. A longer excursion to Yarrawonga is also planned later in the year.

The next meeting will take place on 16 March, when members will gather for the club’s Annual General Meeting and the election of office bearers.
