In a heartfelt ceremony held at the Council’s Chambers, 97 residents of Hills Shire celebrated Australia Day by becoming new citizens of the nation. The event, a joyful occasion for both the new citizens and their community, was marked by a sense of unity and multiculturalism.
Dr. Michelle Byrne, the Mayor of The Hills Shire Council, addressed the crowd, acknowledging the significance of the day and the journey of the new citizens. “This is a tremendous milestone for each of you, and we are honored to be part of your exciting new chapter,” she stated. The Mayor emphasized the strength that lies in the community’s diversity, noting that the new citizens would enrich the local culture with their unique experiences.
“Australia Day offers a moment for all Australians to reflect on the incredible fortune of calling this beautiful country home. I can think of no better day for our new citizens to take the pledge,” she added.
The individuals who took the pledge hail from an impressive 29 different countries, including India, Kenya, New Zealand, Ecuador, China, Mexico, and Sweden. Among these new citizens was Ms. Aye Thidar Thaw from Myanmar, who expressed her pride in becoming an Australian citizen on such a meaningful date.
“Becoming an Australian citizen marks a new chapter filled with belonging and opportunity. I wish to be part of this inclusive community and contribute to its vibrant diversity,” Ms Thidar Thaw said.
The ceremony not only celebrated the individual achievements of the new citizens but also underscored the collective strength and rich cultural tapestry that defines the Hills Shire community.
