The Council progresses its Affordable Housing Strategy for Hornsby Shire

Hornsby Shire Council has taken significant steps to address housing challenges within the community by approving the Hornsby Affordable Housing Strategy.

This important document is geared towards meeting the rising demand for affordable housing in the Shire, establishing a clear framework for planning and facilitating housing options available for purchase and rent.

By analyzing housing market trends, demographics, and economic factors, the strategy aims to enhance access to both market rental and social housing, with special emphasis on supporting key workers who contribute to the community’s vitality.

Furthermore, the strategy supports the recently introduced Affordable Housing Contribution Scheme, which aligns with new planning controls for the Hornsby Town Centre and sets specific rates for affordable housing provision.

Mayor Waddell acknowledged the pressing housing concerns faced by residents, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the Affordable Housing Strategy and the NSW Government’s Transport Oriented Development Program in shaping sustainable housing solutions.

He advocated that a unified approach from all levels of government is essential for the successful delivery of this plan, highlighting the need for legislative frameworks, funding, and effective management of social housing.

The community had an opportunity to provide feedback during a month-long public exhibition period, which resulted in minor enhancements to the strategy for increased clarity.

The revised strategy is readily available online at https://www.hornsby.nsw.gov.au/affordable-housing-strategy.

In addition to discussions about affordable housing, the Council also took several notable actions during its recent meeting, including the approval of the Community Engagement Strategy and the endorsement of the amended Heritage and Housekeeping Planning Proposal.

The Council is also moving forward with plans to establish a Special Entertainment Precinct in the Hornsby Town Centre and is actively pursuing safety assessments and landscape improvements at key intersections following motions from various Councillors.

Further details about these discussions and outcomes can be found on the Council’s website, along with a video recording of the meeting set to be released on Friday afternoon.
