A Close Call for Berowra

Berowra election: First preference count complete for the Division of Berowra (NSW) with all polling places returned.

This election delivered a big surprise nationally, but also in Berowra. Berowra has always been considered a safe liberal seat, but with the results of this election showing a swing of -6% against the Liberal party, the difference between Liberal and Labour in Berowra (after preference count) was only 3,634 votes.

This followed the 2022 election results which also showed a swing against the Liberal Party of -5.88%. But that result showed a difference between Liberal and Labour (after preferences) of 18,236 votes.

Whilst first preference votes clearly showed Julian Leeser (Liberal) received the highest percentage of votes, once preferences were counted, the end result was quite a close call.

So it was a combination of votes for Ben Koshinski (Labour), Martin Cousins (the Greens) and Tina Brown (Independent) which delivered such a close result. The other candidates had low levels of votes so for this exercise, so I have excluded them. It’s worth noting that the biggest swing towards any candidate was Tina Brown at 11.53%.

Some of the polling stations showed interesting swings. For example comparing the rural areas to the residential areas: (these are first preference votes)

Annagrove was

⇒Liberal -7.20%    ⇒Labour +1.60%

⇒Greens +.89%    ⇒Trumpet of Patriots +3.34%

⇒One Nation +4.09%    ⇒ Independent +4.26%

Kenthurst was

⇒Liberal -3.43%    Labour +1.37%

⇒Greens -0.45%    ⇒Trumpet of Patriots +2.52%

⇒One Nation +3.17%    ⇒Independent +6.15%

Cherrybrook – We took the average across 4 polling booths

⇒Liberal -7.89%    ⇒Labour +4.01%

⇒Greens -2.96%    ⇒Trumpet of Patriots +1.17%

⇒One Nation +1.47%    ⇒Independent +10.24%

Overall the rural area swings were more towards the Independent, but also One Nation and Trumpet of Patriots, whereas the residential areas delivered a much higher swing to the Independent, with only minor swings to One Nation or Trumpet of Patriots.
