By Mark Coupar,
As I progress into my twilight years of working I have been starting taking more notice of reforms that have been introduced for our ageing population.
I was recently reading an article in the paper about how as community we need to seriously look at how our society will be reshaped as our population ages.
Australia is getting older faster as all the baby boomers start reaching retirement age.
Figures indicate that by 2026 over 22% of our population will have reached this age, which up from 8.3% back in the 70’s.
It went on to say that by 2050 a quarter of Australians would be over 65.
Our Government spend is approx. $10 billion a year on the aged care sector with two-thirds of this on residential aged care.
The main issue for our elderly population is poor communication, lack of choice and control seem to be the top issues.
Demand for care and support staff in this sector with pay and conditions the biggest issue in the near future.
There is so much more that can be said on this subject and I think people are starting to take notice and action.
Finally, I am letting everyone know that I am retiring on 30th June 2025 after 48years of working with the last 8 as Membership Officer of Dural & District Business Chamber which I have thoroughly enjoyed and met some amazing people along the way.
As for me I have nothing major planned past June 30 but having some relaxion time.
Also thanks to those people who stopped me in the street to give feedback on my articles.
